#Introductions

I played viola da gamba for about 20 years. I used to be a professional, playing with a local consort at weddings, religious services, and museum events.

I had to stop playing for about 5 years, thanks to debilitating back problems. Those are now thankfully resolved, but now my instruments are in need of TLC!

I'm hoping to raise about $850 to restring and re-fret my treble and bass viols & medieval fiddle. Yes, gut strings are expensive!

Tl;dr: in planning a "Renaissance viol", I have a huge number of variables I'll need to pin down.

It's *tempting* to say "anything goes" because surviving evidence is so contradictory. But that's an un-nuanced, lazy approach.

So, yeah. Thinking thinking thinking.

There's even the basic consideration of "useful instrument vs. experimental archaeology" >_<;;;

Two: the court of Maximillian I, in which Isaac and Senfl worked, imported a *lot* of musical talent from Italy. (And as noted, there was at least one Germanic instrument maker in Venice c. 1560.)

So cross-pollination clearly occurred.

Still, there are myriad choices to be made, since viol construction was never standardized.

* Carved or bent top? Both survive.

* Violin-like outline? Viol-like outline? Compromise? (These exist!)

* Internal structure how? (Relates to carved vs. bent tops.)

* 4 strings? 5 strings? 6? All of these are attested!

This is just scratching the surface, really. (...)

So, assuming I can finaggle a way to build a Renaissance viol.

First question I need to ask: From what geographic area and time period?

Best attested, iconographically and in terms of surviving instruments, are mid- to late-century Venetian instruments. One of which seems to be by a German immigrant.

But my performance interest lies mainly in earlier, Franco-Flemish works: Isaac, Senfl. AFAIK Transalpine instruments of this era are nonexistent, and most of the iconography is either crude or fanciful (or both).

That said, two things are in my favor. One, Italian depictions of viols c. 1510 strongly resemble later physical instruments. (...)
